Helicopter courses

Ground School

Formal ground school courses are conducted in aircraft systems and emergency procedures as part of each type or class endorsement. Theory training (supporting and refreshing the IREX qualification) is conducted for Command and Co-Pilot Instrument Rating Courses as well as Night VFR Ratings. A comprehensive ground school syllabus is covered as an important part of the student’s NVG training curriculum.

Multi Engine Command Instrument Rating (CIR) (***)

Package is conducted over a two week period.

  1. AS355 simulator                                               20 hours.
  2. Bell 206 helicopter                                            10 hours.
  3. (SP-IFR) AS355 helicopter (*)                            10 hours.
  4. M/E Command Instrument Rating Test (**)         2 hours.

Multi Engine Co-Pilot Instrument Rating (CPIR)

Package is conducted over a 10 day period.

  1. AS355 simulator                                                5-10 hours.
  2. 2 pilot IFR AS355 helicopter (*)                           10 hours.
  3. Co-Pilot Instrument Rating Test (**)                    1.5 hours.

Night Vision Goggle (NVG)

Package is conducted over a 5 day period. Air-Crewman NVG Training
Courses are run concurrently with the pilot courses-where required.

  1. Theory Training                                                  12 hours.
  2. Bell 206 simulator                                               2 hours.
  3. Bell 206 helicopter                                              5 hours.
  4. NVG Flight Test                                                   1.5 hours.

Night VFR Rating (NVFR)

Package is conducted over a 5 day period.

  1. Theory Training                                                   6 hours.
  2. Bell 206 simulator                                                5 hours.
  3. Bell 206 helicopter                                               10 hours.
  4. Flight Test                                                           1.5hours.

Multi Engine Training Approval (META)

Package conducted over a 3 day period

  1. Theory Training                                                    12 hours.
  2. AS355 helicopter                                                  6 hours.

Endorsement Training

Packages range from a 3 to 6 day period.

  1. BK117 (M/E Command - VFR)                                  10 hours.
  2. AS355 (M/E Command – VFR)                                  5 hours.
  3. Bell 206 S/E                                                           3 or 5 hours.

Specialised Training

  1. NVG Competency Check Flights (CCF) are available on BK117, AS355 & Bell 206
  2. NVG Hoist & Sling Load Operations
  3. Instrument Rating currency training & flight test renewals

(*)          Includes VFR Command AS355 Endorsement.
(**)        Includes GPS Enroute & ILS, VOR, NDB, RNAV(GNSS) & DGA approaches.
(***)      If the applicant already holds an IR-C M/E (A) rating then the (CASA) simulator training requirement is waived. Alternatively if the applicant already holds an Australian military helicopter instrument rating then the flying training is reduced to a 10 hour course on the AS355 plus a flight test.
